Discover Goat Island
Step into New Zealand’s first marine reserve. A world-class destination for snorkeling, diving, and marine education just 90 minutes north of Auckland.
New Zealand’s Premier Marine Sanctuary
Established in 1975, Goat Island (Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve) was the first of its kind in New Zealand. Before its protection, the area was heavily overfished. Today, it stands as a testament to the power of marine conservation, boasting a vibrant ecosystem where fish populations are ten to forty times higher than in unprotected waters.
The reserve covers 547 hectares of shore and sea, stretching from Cape Rodney to Okakari Point. It is a place where you can see large snapper (tāmure), blue maomao, and red moki swimming just inches from your mask.
Did You Know?
The name “Goat Island” is a literal translation of the Māori name Motu Tīkapa. Early European sailors would often leave goats on islands as a food source for shipwrecked mariners.
Unparalleled Exploration
Snorkeling is the most popular activity, allowing visitors to meet the inquisitive snapper. For those who prefer to stay dry, there are other ways to see the magic.
